Old Vs New

In order to distinguish old media from new media, there are specific questions that need to be taken into account that would separate the two.

Can the type of media be accessed by anyone without a large investment?

Is the type of media allow any John Doe to access and broadcast?

If you answered yes, these are considered to be New Media.

Is the media owned and content influenced by (1) corporation/company?
Is the media's main goal to gain a profit?

If you answered yes to the above questions, these companies are old media corporations.

Social Networking

Networking

Social Networking brings a new method in keeping in touch with your social circle. In the latter we will cover (2) social networking sites known as Facebook and Myspace.

Making a social networking ID takes less than about 5 minutes. After logging into my Facebook I noticed a few things. The backround seems to be a basic white, with the theme of a modern effect, leaving the website with a clean cut interface. From how people portray themselves on this social site, you can paint a picture of someones lifestyle based on pictures and comments they post on their page and how they post onto other pages. Most friends made on Facebook are friends that a member has met or known through another friend. Facebooks market ranges from young adults to middle aged people.

Myspace shares many similarities that Facebook has, except it seems that a Myspace page is completely customizable by HTML code. Because of this, Myspace pages seem to be sloppier and not as aesthetically organized like Facebook. Also, Myspace has been geared toward musicians to display their music.

Facebook and Myspace have slight differences in how they are set up and ran, but essentially they are both social networks.

What is New Media?

''New Media''

New Media is a term which refers to the transfer of news and information through new mediums which can be accessed by anyone with connection to the internet. New Media brought introduces a new way to transfer information with little to no cost to the everyday consumer.

Technologies which involve new media include the internet, RSS Feed, Social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, news feeds such as Digg.com and Reddit.com.

The internet is fatal to the success of New Media. Without the internet acting as a cheap medium brining people, businesses and ideas together, the advancement of New Media would come to a screeching halt.

The advancement of New Media is not only taking precedent in the world, but replacing Old Media. As per Article 2. Under New Media, Old Media the writer is using statistics of viewer base for networks over the past few years. He compares most network companies along with magazines and newspapers and concludes that old media is loosing their grip on their target market.

If the current trend continues, Old Media will be in the history books.

LIE 495

I was driving on the LIE today, when i started to ponder why people drive the way people do.

Why do drivers speed up when I turn my signal on?
Why as soon as drivers make eye contact, do they assume automatic warrior mode?
How come aggressive driving exists only in the Tri State area?

Sometimes I wish I could just give up my car and rely on public transportation. Can anyone explain driving habits?

The world in Panera Bread

Culture creates how different groups of people behave. Today I have already been exposed to (2) completely different cultures and I feel the difference between cultures need to be spread.

Guyanese Culture

First I was in Richmond hills Queens today, the town that bears the highest population of Guyanese and Trini people. I visited my uncles home. In his living room, he has a hammock pitched on two walls in the room. A bucket filled with ice and beer by the hammock, and he was just relaxing, listening to music blowing out of speakers the size of 3 plasma screen TV's from the 80's. The best way to describe these people are hillbillies from the Caribbean.

Greek Culture

Towards the end of the day, I made my way to Paramus NJ, which has a very large Greek Orthodox Church. I walked into the home of my relatives and I saw the integration of the classical Greek art with modern home design, which is not as good as it sounds. My relatives would hang a Greek flag in the most undesirable area in the home. Also, the people are very prideful, and act as if they all were born with blue blood.

This being the very least describes how different cultures can be, but one can only recognize major differences if they were to live and experience both cultures. My mother was born in British Guyana. My father was born in Greece. I am a New Yorker
